1. Pick your VoIP phones

VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. Sorry, but traditional phones don’t work with VoIP because they run over the internet rather than through a traditional phone circuit. There are 2 main decisions that need to be made regarding buying VoIP phones. Choosing a “Softphone” (a software based phone that looks and acts like a normal phone), or a “Hard Phone” (a regular phone on your desk just like what you probably have now). Prices range from FREE to around $400. We offer Softphones from Counterpath and 3CX, and Hard Phones from Snom. If you choose a Softphone, you will need a good computer headset and we do recommend the Plantronics brand which are available on our website.

2. Pick your SIP Plan

SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol and is really nothing more than the phone lines themselves. To put it at the 5th grade level, it’s your dial tone, your phone number, and your long distance plan. We offer several plans to choose from, such an unlimited calls in the United States (with no time restrictions) for around $29 per month per line. Other plans include a lower price per month for service and a set number of minutes where you simply pay extra should you go over the allotted minutes. In many cases, you can transfer (what we call “port”) your existing phone numbers to your new VoIP system, including toll-free numbers and even fax numbers.

3. Pick your PBX

PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange. Although this step is not required to get VoIP for your business, it is recommended for its vast number of features such as Automated Attendant, Extension to Extension calling, Dial By Name, Voicemails, Ring Groups, Faxing, Call Queuing, etc. No matter if you have a large business or a small business, having a PBX to handle call routing is a great tool. We have a variety of PBX systems from 3CX to choose from based on your business needs.
